What is a Driver Abstract?

A driver abstract is a printed summary of a person’s driving record, including merit and demerit points, convictions and suspensions. It’s kind of like a academic transcript, but for driving.

The release of information from a driver abstract is regulated by the Access to Motor Vehicle Information Regulation (AMVIR). This means that we can only provide your driver abstract to you, to an individual to whom you have provided consent or to an organization which has an AMVIR agreement and has received consent from you to request the information.

There are 2 types of abstracts that can be requested for 3, 5 or 10 year periods. The cost of all driver’s abstracts is $28 for either SDA or CDA, regardless of how many years you are requesting.

A Standard Driver's Abstract provides information from an individual’s driving record, including:

  • driver information (name, address, licence number and issue date, etc.)

  • driver’s appearance (height, weight, sex, etc.)

  • current status of the driver's licence

  • conviction information

  • demerit points

  • suspensions.

The Driver's Abstract doesn’t show the individual's driving experience or the date first licensed.

Once your purchase has been completed, you can download your Standard Driver's Abstract from My Digital Downloads on the My Account section.

A Commercial Driver's Abstract allows for employers to assess safety risks associated with a driver prior to hiring them. It provides most of the same information as the Standard Driver's Abstract plus information about Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) inspections.

However, the Commercial Driver's Abstract does not include information about the driver’s appearance.

Requesting Your Abstract In Person

The simplest way to get an abstract is to visit Altafacts in person. When you arrive to the Registry, we will need you to fill out a Request for Personal Driving and Motor Vehicle Information form. We provide the form here for your reference, but please note that it will need to be signed and witnessed in our office.

Please note that you will have to tell us whether you want a SDA or CDA (see above) – if you are requesting the abstract for employment purposes, you should ask you employer which type is required. You will also need to tell us if you want a 3, 5, or 10 year period abstract.

Authorizing a Third Party to Request Your Driver Abstract

If you cannot attend the Registry in person, you can authorize another individual to do so on your behalf. That person will need to show valid identification (Alberta driver’s licence is preferred) and will need an Driver Abstract Consent Form completed by you. (can be faxed or emailed) They will also need to fill in the Driver Abstract Statement of Intent(original copy ONLY), must be so be sure to let the person coming in on your behalf know exactly which product you require.

If you are giving your consent to an organization with an AMVIR agreement, that organization will ask you to fill out a Driver Abstract Consent form and they will keep this form on file.

The cost for all Driver Abstracts is $28.
