Renew your Alberta Driver’s Licence or ID Card Online

Alberta continues to modernize the delivery of registry services for residents of Alberta. Service Alberta announced on May 16, 2022 that Albertans are now able to renew their Alberta Driver’s Licences or ID Cards online, using their MyAlberta.ca accounts.

How do I know if I can renew my Alberta Driver’s Licence or ID Card online?

You will be able to renew online if:

  • you are a resident of Alberta

  • your photo and signature on file are less than 10 years old

  • your Driver’s Licence or ID Card has not been expired for 6 months or more

  • you are between 18 years old and 75 years old

  • you do not require a driver’s medical

  • there are no restrictions or outstanding fines on your file

  • you do not require any demographic changes to your licence (ie. gender, height, weight, address, name etc.)

What do I need to renew my Alberta ID Card or Driver’s Licence?

First, you will need to login with your verified MADI account. If you don’t have one, you can create a MADI account here.

In addition, you will also need your Driver’s Licence number from your current card. Unfortunately, if you have lost your card, you will need to come into Altafacts Search & Registry to renew or to request a duplicate.

Can I keep my old ID Card or Alberta Driver’s Licence?

Service Alberta has revised the existing motor vehicle policy so that the experience online is the same as the in-person experience. Effective immediately, registry agents are no longer required to shred your current ID Card or Driver’s Licence when we renew. You can keep it in your wallet and use it for photo ID. Be sure to keep your temporary licence with you as well so you can prove that your Driver’s Licence has been renewed.

Lastly, it is very important, whether you renew online or in person, that you destroy your old card after the new one has arrived in the mail. It is an offense to hold more than one Alberta Driver’s Licence or ID Card.

What if I need to make changes to my Alberta Driver’s Licence?

If you need to make any changes to your Alberta Driver’s Licence, including change of address, height, weight, name or gender, you will need to come into the registry to see us.

What do I do if I have any problem?

At Altafacts Search & Registry, we pride ourselves on exceptional service.

Feel free to give us a call at (403) 235-7899 or email us at search@altafacts.com you have any difficulties. We also make it easy to come visit us.

Does this mean I never have to go to the registry again?

Online services are offered as a collaboration between Service Alberta and the network of Alberta registry agents that deliver in-person registry services across the province. We are working together to ensure that Albertans have access to registry services in the way that is most convenient for them – whether that’s online or in person.

Altafacts Search & Registry will always be here for services that require in-person service, or any other registry services that you just prefer to do in person.

You will only be able to renew your Driver’s Licence every other time. We will need to see you every 10 years so we can update your photo and signature on file. This is to make sure that you always have a licence with a current photo and to ensure the integrity of the motor vehicle database.

What if I prefer in-person service?

Altafacts Search & Registry are always happy to see you, whether it’s for an Alberta Driver’s Licence renewal or any other registry service.
